We are currently seeking Communications/Education Interns who are interested in gaining experience in science communications and/or STEM education related to modern astronomy, specifically in the area of Multi-Messenger and Time-Domain Astronomy (MMA and TDA respectively). The interns will work on a specific project or projects and mentor with Gemini staff in creating materials for K-12 education, public outreach and/or communications in MMA and TDA. There are a total of four, 6-month, full-time internships spread over 2 years with each intended to provide experiences that will enhance the successful candidate’s future career in science education and/or communications, especially in a modern astronomical or related research environment.
The position is located at the Gemini North (GN) Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii.
The Gemini Observatory is managed by The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), a consortium of 46 US institutions and four international affiliates that operates world-class astronomical observatories. AURA’s role is to establish, nurture, and promote public observatories and facilities that advance innovative astronomical research. AURA is responsible for managing the operations of the Gemini Observatory, the National Optical Astronomical Observatory, the National Solar Observatory, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and the construction of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope.
Essential Functions:
+Work closely with Public Information and Outreach (PIO) staff mentor(s) to successfully initiate and execute project(s) that support Gemini Observatory's work in disseminating MMA and/or TDA to students, teachers, media and/or the public.
+Develop and implement creative ideas, concepts and activities that promote the understanding of MMA and/or TDA to identified audiences.
Other Functions:
+Create resource materials in MMA/TDA which provide educational or communications content for students, teachers, and/or the public.
+Work with individual scientists to identify significant topics and findings in MMA/TDA for dissemination to an identified audience.
+Interns will assist with the testing of materials in classrooms when appropriate.
+Create a final report and/or presentation at the conclusion of internship to reflect your overall experience to present to staff and/or submit to supervisor.
+Other relevant projects as assigned by supervisor.
Required Education/ Experience/ Skills/ Abilities:
Currently enrolled (or have completed within prior 2 years) in an accredited degree program, in areas such as:
- Astronomy/Astrophysics
- Science/Technology Journalism
- Education (with focus on physical science discipline
Consideration (in lieu of above requirement) may be given to non-traditional students based upon relevancy to the goals of the internship, potential for career advancement, and likely impact on public understanding of science.
+Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications
+Interest in pursuing a career in science communications, education, or informal science education
+Strong organizational skills
Preferred Education/ Experience/ Skills/ Abilities:
+Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or equivalent
+Innovative and ethical use of Social Media
+Effective use of collaborative document development environments (preferably Google Docs)
